Does living with pulmonary hypertension affect self-image?

Here at the PHA UK we are assisting a trainee psychologist to conduct a research study into whether pulmonary hypertension affects how people see themselves – with the ultimate aim of developing support in this area if it’s needed.

We are inviting adults with pulmonary hypertension to have individual online chats with Jacob Pendrey, who is studying at Cardiff University, to better understand the lived experience of how the disease affects self-image.

The online chats (called ‘interviews’ for the purpose of the study) will be conducted via Zoom or Teams and will take around an hour.

To help guide the interviews, Jacob will be asking participants to share three to five pictures or photographs that help illustrate their journey of living with pulmonary hypertension. These can be of yourself, of your home, a particular place, or something more abstract that you feel represents how you felt at the time following your diagnosis through to the present day. More detail about this will be provided before the interview is booked.

“Researching self-image will highlight where living with PH has affected people the most, rather than just medical outcomes like symptoms reduction. It is my hope that findings from this study will help tailor service provision to where it feels most meaningful and impactful – so by getting involved, you’ll be helping to make a difference”
